PSEG Nuclear Continues to Battle Grassing

The Salem Nuclear Power Station has tripped offline for the third time in a week due to a continued struggle to keep the water intakes of the plant clear. A spring weather disturbance is what is being blamed for all the trouble. Grass and debris were stirred when the storm blew in on April 25, 2007 and it is still wrecking havoc on the re-circulating system. Some grass is expected to enter the system, and Salem is prepared to handle a good amount of debris without it causing too much trouble. This time though, the intake of grass has exceeded at least four times the limit. Officials have had to clean out Unit 1’s water-box by hand, and if anything were to reach the next stop in the water system, the water heaters, it could prove to be an even bigger problem.

Although, Hope Creek shares the same site as Salem, they are not experiencing the same issues. Hope Creek, which is ten years younger, requires a substantially smaller amount of water due to a more advanced system.
