Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--This past weekend, Exelon Corporation (NYSE:EXC) (Chicago, Illinois) was forced to remove a nuclear unit at the Quad Cities Nuclear Station in Cordova, Illinois, because of mechanical repairs on its piping systems. Engineers noticed deformations in the bellows, a component in the expansion joint piping systems. The main function of the bellows is to relieve excessive vibrations and pipe expansions caused by heat and ground movement. Under extreme conditions, the bellows can become unstable, leading to pipe bursts. In addition, the plant is performing testing and maintenance to the electrical circuit breakers. Plant officials hope to complete repairs and have the unit returned by this weekend.
Exelon is one of the nation's largest electric utilities with more than $15 billion in annual revenues. It distributes electricity to approximately 5.2 million customers in Illinois and Pennsylvania. With its combined fleet of nuclear power plants, Exelon is the largest nuclear generator in the United States.
