Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). In recent years, Quad/Graphics Incorporated (Sussex, Wisconsin) has been involved in an expansion program across its United States printing plants. In 2004 alone, Quad purchased $275 million worth of printing equipment, mainly new presses and finishing systems, which it intends to install across its plants over the next few years.
In Sussex, Wisconsin Quad is spending $40 million to install two new presses in its existing 1.5 million square foot plant. The first of two expansion phases at this location, construction is anticipated to begin in the fall of 2005. The second phase of the project will involve an additional $20 million expenditure revolving around the installation of a new Goss 64-page format printing press. The second phase of the project is anticipated to begin construction in early 2006.
In Hartford, Wisconsin Quad will invest another $30 million on the installation of a new MAN Rolland 64-page printing press in its existing 180,000 square foot plant. This project is expected to begin construction in the late fall of 2005 with the new press becoming operational in the summer of 2006.
And finally, Quad is going to invest $15 million on an expansion of its facility in Pewaukee, Wisconsin. This expansion will involve the installation of offset/gravure presses in the existing plant. Construction should begin this winter with the new presses online by the spring of 2006.
When this expansion program is all said and done, Quad will have made significant increases in its capacity at all of its printing plants in the United States. The increase in productivity and capacity as well as production efficiency should help Quad stay at the forefront of the printing industry for years to come.
Quad/Graphics Incorporated was founded in 1971 in an abandoned millwork factory in Pewaukee, Wisconsin. In 1978, Quad became the printer for Newsweek magazine, a turning point for the company. Since then, the company has been growing in leaps and bounds, having been recognized as the Printer of the Year by Newsweek for 19 consecutive years. Quad currently operates nine plants in the United States: Hartford, Wisconsin; Lomira, Wisconsin; Martinsburg, West Virginia; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Pewaukee, Wisconsin; Saratoga Springs, New York; Sussex, Wisconsin; The Rock, Georgia; and West Allis, Wisconsin. Quad also maintains international partnerships in Argentina, Brazil and Poland.
