Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Bokaro Steel Plant in the state of Jharkhand in eastern India is Asia's largest integrated steel plant. The facility, owned and operated by Steel Authority of India Limited (BSE:500113) (SAIL) (New Delhi), has awarded a turnkey contract to RAD-CON Incorporated (Lakewood, Ohio) to develop a hydrogen batch annealing facility. The bell-type batch-annealing facility will have a processing capacity of 860,000 tons per year of cold-rolled steel and will primarily cater to the requirements of the domestic automotive market. The contract is part of Bokaro Steel's $80 million plan to expand installed cold-rolling capacity to 1.3 million tons per year, which in turn is part of SAIL's plan to have an installed steel-producing capacity of 20 million tons per year by 2010.
According to the agreement, RAD-CON will be responsible for supervising the entire production and installation of the firm's proprietary 100% Hydrogen Super-High Convection annealing system at the steel plant. The annealing system consists of 26 furnaces, 47 bases, 20 forced coolers and allied controls. CAPS, a popular software system used in level-2 annealing facilities, is used to track production activities at the unit. In addition, a post-cooling facility comprising 49 bases to facilitate dehumidified air-cooling will also be a part of the project.
The project is currently in the design/engineering phase and is slated for commissioning later this year. RAD-CON will play the role of a technical leader for the project in collaboration with Modern India Construction Company (MICC) (Kolkata, West Bengal), a subsidiary of Gillanders Arbuthnot & Company Limited (BSE:532716) (Kolkata), and MACO Corporation India Private Limited (Kolkata), a domestic provider of industrial services and imported equipment. MICC and MACO will supply indigenous items and offer turnkey installation services required for construction of the annealing facility under the supervision of RAD-CON.
RAD-CON is a global leader in full-service bell annealing technology. The firm recently acquired Entec Systems International (Cleveland, Ohio), thereby gaining ownership of the proprietary CAPS annealing software. CAPS complements RAD-CON's product offerings and provides seamless integration of various elements in the production process.
RAD-CON's 100% hydrogen annealing technology offers reliability, high performance and minimal maintenance combined with sophisticated controls. The firm has partnered with Danieli Centro Combustion SpA (Milan, Italy), a supplier of plant equipment for the global metal industry, to leverage the latter's market network and manufacturing facilities across the globe. Danieli markets and supplies RAD-CON's batch annealing technology globally.
