Research Project Featuring NIH BioLab is Worth $80.5 Million and Largest Capital Investment in Saint Louis University’s History

While a number of contractors submitted bids on the new tower, in the end, SLU selected a hometown firm, Clayco Construction, to serve as the construction manager and general contractor for the first phase.

Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Info Resources; Houston, Texas). When construction is complete on the contemporary steel, brick and glass building currently rising at Grand and Choutea in Saint Louis, Saint Louis University (SLU) will have an additional 200,000 square-feet of medical research space. And the nation will have a new NIH-funded 38,000 square-foot Center for Research in Emerging Infections and Vaccines within the new tower. Following spending trends of universities across the nation (see 2006 Pharmaceutical-Biotech Forecast), the $67 million, ten-story medical research tower is just the first phase of an $80.5 million investment the school is making to increase research facilities.

As reported by Industrialinfo.com in April 2005 (see Pharmaceutical Tracker - Online Database), Cannon Design (Saint Louis, Missouri) was chosen to design the building, which will connect to the existing Saint Louis University School of Medicine facility. In addition to housing a Biosafety Level-3 Lab (BSL-3), an animal research lab and core labs, seven of the building’s floors will feature flexible, modular research labs. It is the largest building project in the university’s 187-year history.

While a number of contractors submitted bids on the new tower, in the end, SLU selected a hometown firm, Clayco Construction, to serve as the construction manager and general contractor for the first phase. After the tower is complete in 2007, the school hopes to begin the second phase of the project. An additional $13.5 million will be invested to renovate existing medical research space, with a new bidding process to be held at a later date to select a general contractor for that phase of the project.
