RWE Power Announces Power Barges Project

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--RWE Power, a division of RWE Group (OTC:RWEOY), (Essen Germany) recently presented the "Power Barges" project at the German "E-World: Energy & Water" trade fair in Essen. By the year 2010 the energy provider plans to offer electricity produced by combined-cycle gas-turbine power stations erected on floating pontoons that can moved and deployed between different destinations.

The construction of the floating power plants takes about 12 to 18 months. Each one will be placed on a pontoon measuring 30 to 100 meters. Since the barges do not have engines, a tugboat moves them to the desired location, where they will be connected to the local grid. Operational areas could be, for example, the eastern Mediterranean or the Black Sea. In Eastern Europe especially, the power consumption is rising steadily, and the capacities of existing power plants are insufficient to meet this growing demand.

The project is the only one of its kind in Europe. Worldwide, there are currently about 60 power barges with capacities ranging from 30 to 220 megawatts. Six of these barges are in New York.
