Safeway Selects Contractor for New Massive West Coast Food Distribution Center

In September of last year, Safeway acquired 115 acres of property in Auburn, Washington from Boeing and plans to raze seven existing structures. Boeing shed the structures during consolidation of its Puget Sound aircraft fabrication operations.
Once demolition, drainage, and storm water infrastructure is rebuilt, Safeway plans to construct two new warehouse structures totaling over $42 million in investment.
The new Safeway complex will involve constructing a 766,000 square foot dry goods warehouse and a 514,000 square foot refrigerated warehouse. As many as 800 new parking spaces will be provided as well as spaces for tractor trailers and trucks. An administration building, truck shop and recycling center will also be built.
Turner Construction (Seattle, Washington) has been selected as the general contractor for the project and demolition and site preparation is scheduled to begin this week. Construction will be completed by August of 2004.
Safeway operates approximately 1,700 Safeway stores across the US and Canada. These include 329 Vons stores in Southern California and Nevada, 132 Randall's and Tom Thumb stores in Texas, 42 Genuardi's stores in the Philadelphia area, as well as 21 Carrs stores in Alaska.
