Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Saudi Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) has envisaged a plan to build a hyperscale data center network in the region. The MCIT is said to be working with the private sector, and local and international players to achieve this ambitious goal.
MCIT's new data center development plan aims to surpass 1,300 megawatts (MW) of power capacity with the help of private sector in order to enable Saudi Arabia to become a "computing powerhouse and the digital hub" for the region. The investment would be about $18 billion.
According to a report issued by Al Rajhi Capital, the coronavirus pandemic has led to increased demand for companies to digitalize their processes and embrace cloud-based services. "In Saudi Arabia, according to our conversation with industry experts, the total requirement for data space in the next 5-6 years would be 360 MW and currently it is only 60 MW," the Al Rajhi Capital report said.
Several local and international industries are already working with MCIT to help the country develop a network of hyperscale colocation capacity data centers to attract more digital investment such as cloud service providers, gaming publishers, video streaming service operators, and content delivery network operators to localize their services inside the Kingdom.
Industrial Info currently is tracking only $33 million in data center projects in Saudi Arabia. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Database can click here for a list.
