Shire Pharmaceuticals Nears Completion of $10 Million Maryland Expansion

Shire U.S. Manufacturing, a division of Shire Pharmaceuticals Group plc (NASDAQ: SHPGY) (Basingstoke, England), is midway through construction on an expansion of their manufacturing plant (Plant 1059436) in Owings Mill, Maryland (PEC 26000756). The project includes 2,400 square feet of laboratories, 8,300 square feet of new production areas, cleanrooms and a second story penthouse to hold mechanical and processing equipment for manufacturing. Also included in construction plans is additional office space as well as the renovation of existing laboratories and the lunchroom area.

Atlantic Builders Group (Baltimore, Maryland) is handling construction for the project, which began earlier this year. The work presented some challenges, as the Shire site has remained fully occupied and operational for the duration of the project.

Shire bought the Owings Mill plant in 2002 from Atlantic Pharmaceutical Services of Owings Mill. Almost immediately upon purchasing the 50,000 square foot facility, Shire ramped up production of their leading products, including Adderall, a treatment for attention deficit disorder (ADD).
