Researched by Protel Associates Limited in alliance with Industrial Info Europe (Galway, Ireland)--A £39 million ($64.6 million) construction contract has been awarded to J Sisk and Son (Hertfordshire, England) for the U.K.'s largest planned gas-fired combined-cycle power plant in Pembrokeshire, owned by RWE npower (Swindon, England), a division of RWE Power AG (OTC:RWEOY) (Essen, Germany).

Sisk's Major Projects division has 13 months to construct the substructure and reinforced concrete work for the five turbine halls at the 2,000-megawatt (MW) Pembroke Power Station, together with the associated cooling water-pipe work and ancillary site services. The contract was awarded by Alstom SA (EPA:ALO) (Levallois-Perret, France), which secured the contract for the £1 billion project in April this year. The construction work is expected to be complete by September 2010. For additional information, see related April 28, 2009, article -Alstom to Build U.K.'s Biggest Combined-Cycle Power Plant.

The power plant is being built on the site of the former oil-fired Pembroke Power Station, which shut down in 1997 and was demolished between 2000 and 2003. The plant will boast high-load flexibility and maintain low emissions and high efficiency. Alstom claimed the plant "will be able to be run as efficiently at low load as at full capacity during peak hours, allowing the operator to respond to fluctuating energy demands."

"This is a significant project, and it is fantastic for Sisk to be a part of it," said Nigel Warnes, director of major projects at Sisk. "We have undertaken some very complex civil engineering projects across Europe, including power, pharmaceutical and major infrastructure; this experience and specialist expertise will underpin the successful delivery of the Pembroke Power Station."

Stephen Burgin, Country President and Head of Power for Alstom in the U.K. added: "This will become one of the most advanced, fuel efficient combined cycle gas turbine power stations in the country and will form an important part of the energy supply mix as older plants are phased out.

"We are delighted to bring Sisk on board for this phase of the scheme. They have shown real attention to detail in their plans that promise delivery exactly to specification, ensuring the next phase of construction can continue to schedule."

According to RWE npower, about 40% of the U.K. energy fleet was constructed before 1975 and will need replacement in the short to medium term.

RWE npower is already working with Alstom to build the new 1,650-MW gas-fired combined-cycle power plant in Staythorpe, Nottingham, U.K. For additional information, see related August 29, 2007, article - Alstom Scores $2.8 Billion Global Power Contracts in August.

Sisk has worked with Alstom previously on the building of the Aghada CCGT plant in Cork Harbour, Ireland, owned by Ireland's national energy utility Electricity Supply Board (Dublin). Alstom is supplying a 430-MW CCGT unit to replace a 270-MW conventional steam-generating unit, three 85-MW open-cycle gas turbines and two temporary 26-MW peaking capacity gas turbines.
