Skanska, Promon Consortium to Build HDS Unit at Brazil's Refap Refinery

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A consortium formed by Skanska (Stockholm, Sweden) and Promon (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) has been awarded a $150 million contract to build a processing unit at Petrobras' (NYSE: PBR) (Rio de Janeiro) Alberto Pascualini (Refap) refinery, which is located in Canoas, Porto Alegre. The legal agreement includes the detailed engineering, purchasing, construction, electromechanical installations and assistance with commissioning and start-up of a new hydrodesulfurization (HDS) unit.

The new facility will use Axens (Cedex, France) technology and will have a processing capacity of 5,000 cubic meters per day. It is part of an environmental program implemented in the country that aims to lower the sulfur contents in petroleum products. Work will start in April and is expected to be completed in 30 months. Axens, (Cedex, France) conducted the project's basic engineering, and the refinery performed basic utilities engineering. The low-pressure (30 t/h) HDS naphtha unit will be supported by the already operating hydrogen generating unit 1. The existing sulfur recovery nits already provide the plant with the necessary capacity, so additional units of this type will not be built.

Within the last four years, Skanska has also been awarded two other contracts at the Refap refinery. One contract was for services management, basic and detailed engineering, procurement, civil work, construction and execution of activities for conditioning and operation assisted for the implementation of a sulfur recovery plant. The other was for the detailed engineering, procurement, civil construction, industrial erection, conditioning, preoperational tests, start-up and assistance in operation for a six-month period for a hydrogen generation plant.
