South Africa Set to Approve 10 GW of Renewable Power Projects
South Africa's government is processing applications for 9,789 megawatts (MW) of renewable-energy projects under the Integrated Renewable Energy and Resource Efficiency Programme (IREREP)
Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--South Africa's government is processing applications for 9,789 megawatts (MW) of renewable-energy projects under the Integrated Renewable Energy and Resource Efficiency Programme (IREREP). It comprises 6,890 MW of wind energy and 2,899 MW of solar photovoltaic power projects, which is equivalent to almost one-third of the country's current electricity demand.
State utility Eskom (Sunninghill) is failing to meet South Africa's current electricity demand. The country has experienced rotational power cuts, and imposed load shedding of more than 10 hours a day. The power crisis has forced Eskom to extend the lives of some of its aging coal-fired plants, which contribute 80% of total installed power. For more information, see Industrial Info's March 27, 2023, article - South African Government Aims to Curb Power Outages.
South Africa's environment ministry shortened the required time frame for renewable-power project approvals from 107 days to 57 days. The majority of these upcoming projects include battery energy storage systems (BESS) and transmission and distribution (T&D) infrastructure upgrades, which helps to achieve energy security and maintain adequate transmission infrastructure.
