Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--South Carolina is proving a hive of industrial activity, with Industrial Info tracking more than $7.7 billion worth of projects presently under construction in the state. Thanks to some large automotive projects, the Industrial Manufacturing Industry leads South Carolina in terms of current spending.
Carmaker BMW (Munich, Germany) takes a leading role in South Carolina's spending with three projects to support the manufacture of electric vehicles (EVs). Two of these projects are occurring at the company's assembly plant in Greer, where it is expanding the 7 million-square-foot complex with an 850,000-square-foot building expansion to manufacture EVs. In addition, a new 204,000-square-foot press shop is under construction, which will house a production line, two sheet metal presses and five stamping stations. The press shop is expected to be completed later this year, while the assembly building will be completed in mid-2025. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can learn more by viewing the project reports on the assembly plant and press shop.
About 20 miles down the road in Woodruff, BMW is establishing a grassroot plant to manufacture the lithium-ion batteries needed for the new vehicles that will be rolling out of the Greer plant. Further away, in Florence, Envision-AESC LLC (Smyrna, Tennessee) is establishing a battery plant that also will support production from the Greer facility through the manufacture of 30 gigawatt-hours of batteries per year. Both the BMW and Envision-AESC projects are expected to be completed in 2026. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project reports on the Woodruff and Florence battery projects.
The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) soon will be receiving an upgrade to its delivery fleet via South Carolina when Oshkosh Corporation (Oshkosh, Wisconsin) completes its renovation of a former distribution center in Spartanburg in the coming months. The 945,000-square-foot building is undergoing structural renovations and equipment additions to enable it to manufacture zero-emissions EVs and low-emissions internal-combustion vehicles for USPS. The indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract between Oshkosh and USPS provides for the delivery of between 50,000 and 165,000 vehicles over a period of 10 years. These vehicles will replace the existing fleet of delivery vehicles, many of which have been in service for more than 30 years. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.
South Carolina has in the past been a strong spot for the U.S. textiles sector, which has seen somewhat of a reemergence in the state over the past several years. Shaw Industries Group Incorporated (Dalton, Georgia) is expanding one of its carpet yarn plants in the state, located in Aiken, by constructing a 530,800-square-foot building addition with supporting systems to enable the company to help meet current and future demand for its high-performance carpet products. General contractor Schaerer Contracting Company Incorporated (Chattanooga, Tennessee) kicked off construction early last year and is expected to wrap up the project by the end of 2024. Cryptocurrencies have become an important part of the modern financial world, and much of the journey begins with currency mining. With a view toward accumulating currency, Atlas Holdings LLC (Greenwich, Connecticut) is renovating a 750,000-square-foot former printing plant in Spartanburg to mine cryptocurrency. When fully operational, the facility will require about 100 megawatts of power. Atlas' facility is expected to begin operations toward the middle of this year. While South Carolina doesn't have a large mining segment, a couple of current projects can be found at the state's mines and quarries. Among these is Haile Gold Mine Incorporated's (Kershaw, South Carolina) expansion of its gold mine in Kershaw, which will increase production and extend the mine's life. In 2022, Haile started construction by developing the Horseshoe deposit as a 2,000-ton-per-day underground longhole stoping mine that will operate concurrently with the existing open-pit mine to contribute 750,000 tons per year of milled ore feed, containing an estimated 83,000 ounces of gold, per year. This would boost Haile's capacity from the site to 250,000 ounces per year. The project is expected to be completed later this year.
