SRP Navajo Station Offline Due to Unplanned Outage

Salt River Project’s Navajo generating station was forced offline yesterday due to a faulty main steam drainpipe.

Released Friday, February 09, 2007

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Salt River Project’s Navajo generating station was forced offline yesterday due to a faulty main steam drainpipe. The station’s 800-megawatt (MW) Unit 01 was brought offline when leaks were discovered in the drainpipe. Repairs to the pipe are nearing completion and operators are expecting the unit to start ramping up within the next 24 hours. The station’s Unit 02, another 800 MW unit, has been offline since late January for planned boiler inspections and maintenance. Unit 02 is expected to remain offline until February 25th.

The Navajo Power Station is located on the Navajo Indian Reservation near Paige, Arizona. The station provides electricity for customers in Arizona, Nevada, and California. The station consists of three 750 MW coal-fired units with a maximum capacity of 2,250 megawatts. Plant construction began in 1969 and the first unit began producing electricity in 1974. Construction costs were $650 million, which includes $200 million in environmental control equipment. An additional $420 million was spent on new scrubber equipment in the 1990’s. Each unit is equipped with a scrubber and the Navajo station ranks among one of the cleanest coal-fired power plants in the country.

The Navajo Generating Station is owned by the Salt River Project (SRP). SRP consists of two entities: the Salt River Project Agricultural Improvement and Power District, a subdivision of the state of Arizona; and the Salt River Valley Water User’s Association, a private corporation. The district provides electricity to more than 900,000 customers in the Phoenix area. It participates in the operations of eleven major power plants and numerous other generating stations including thermal, natural gas, and hydroelectric sources. SRP’s net revenue for 2005 was $362 million.
