Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) -- "While actively repairing damages from the earthquake disaster in Chengdu, the State Grid Corporation of China is preparing for peak load in the coming summer, as well as ensuring the power supply for the coming Beijing Olympic Games", said Lu Jian, the news spokesman and general manager assistant of the State Grid Corporation of China (SGC) (Beijing) on a news conference held in Beijing on May 23, 2008.

According to the information released on the news conference, the SGC has suffered a major casualty and heavy property losses resulted from the quake. As of May 22, the disaster left 66 employees of the SGC dead, 379 injured with another 357 missing. Power facilities and grid operation suffered from a serious damage. Totally 247 transformer substations at 35 kilovolts or above and 1,643 transmission lines at 10 kilovolts or above were forced to shutdown. Power supply for 110 counties in 23 cities or prefectures in Sichuan, Gansu, Shaanxi and Chongqing were affected. Based on incomplete statistics, direct economic loss of the SGC is expected to surpass $1.43 billion.

Presently, power supply for Gansu, Chongqing and Shaanxi grids has been fully resumed. Over 90% of users in the hardest hit areas of the recent 8.0-magnitude quake hit Sichuan province, including Chengdu, Deyang, Mianyang and Guangyuan cities, are receiving power, and power supply for all disaster areas are expected to resume by June 10, 2008.

The focus of the SGC's work in the wake of the quake disaster is shifting from rescuing to reconstruction. Reconstruction of the grid will be carried out in-phase with entire reconstruction plan of the government, said Lu Jian. Based on the investigation of researchers at the site, the SGC will improve the requirement on grid equipment in against quake during the reconstruction in the next stage.
