Statoil's Kalundborg Refinery Schedules Major Turnaround

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Denmark's Kalundborg Refinery, located about 60 kilometers from Copenhagen, has scheduled a major turnaround in the third quarter of 2011. The refinery is owned by Statoil Denmark A/S, a subsidiary of Statoil ASA (NYSE:STO) (Stavenger, Norway), and is responsible for refining crude oil and condensate into gasoline, jet fuel, diesel oil, propane, heating oil and fuel oil.

The Kalundborg Refinery has an annual production capacity of 5.5 million metric tons of petroleum products, producing gasoline and diesel with less than 0.005% sulphur. The refinery receives crude feedstock and condensate from North Sea oil fields, but the majority of the condensate feedstock comes from Statoil's gas processing plant in Kårstø, Norway. Most of its products are exported to neighboring Baltic countries.

The $8.5 million turnaround is scheduled to last 45 days. The following projects will be part of the turnaround:

• The 18,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) diesel hydrotreater unit (Section 850) requires inspection and repairs, including repairs of the reactor.
• The 5,000-BBL/d reformer (CCR Powerformer) requires inspections and repairs, including repairs on the two reactors.
• The gasoline hydrotreater unit (Section 800) requires inspection and repairs, including repairs of the reactor.
• The 28,000 BBL/d visbreaker unit (Section 680) and thermal cracker (Section 5600) require inspections and repairs.
• The naphtha hydrotreater (Section 300) requires inspection and repairs.
