Sumitomo Chemical Plans to Begin Commercial Operation of New Compounding Line in Georgia and Plans for Expansion

Construction of this nearly $10 million plant began in early 2004

Released Wednesday, March 30, 2005

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Sumitomo Chemical America, Incorporated (New York, New York), a subsidiary of Sumitomo Chemical Company Limited (Osaka, Japan), has completed construction of its newest thermoplastics compounding line, located in Conyers, Georgia, on East Park Drive. The new plant will produce an estimated 5,000 metric tons per year of thermoplastic olefins (TPO) to serve the growing number of regional automotive manufacturing plants and tier suppliers.

Construction of this nearly $10 million plant began in early 2004 and was mechanically complete this past November. Sumitomo is currently completing validation and quality control sampling for specific clients and customers. The new building was built to accommodate growth, and plans are already in progress for the addition of a second production line at the Conyers site, with the potential of construction beginning in 2006.

This new plant is located on the site of Liochem Incorporated (Conyers, Georgia), a subsidiary of Toyo Ink Manufacturing Company Limited (Tokyo, Japan), which will operate the new production line as part of its existing ink manufacturing complex in Conyers. The new line occupies just one of the four buildings Liochem owns and operates at the Conyers site.

Industrialinfo.com originally reported plans for the grassroot plant in as part of its North American Projects Database in June of 2002, when the plant was planned to be built in Michigan, then later in Ohio, then ultimately in Georgia.
