Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). In October 2003, Ohio State University (OSU) Medical Center (Columbus, Ohio) held groundbreaking ceremonies heralding the construction of a long-awaited $121 million Biomedical Research Tower (PLANT 1057839) (PEC 10002676). OSU, which is currently placed 37th among 126 U.S. medical schools and 50th out of approximately 600 medical research programs (in terms of federal medical research funding), hopes the increased research capacity will aid in their quest to move up to 30th in both rankings by 2008.
The 10-story, 372,000 square foot building was aggressively designed, enabling it to feature over 65 percent usable space for research, opposed to the standard of 55 percent. The tower will support research in seven major areas of biomedical research, including heart and lung disease and tissue engineering.
In a joint venture, Bovis Lend Lease (Columbus, Ohio) and Miles-McClellan (Columbus, Ohio) are serving as the project's construction managers. Bids will be open in March of this year. Construction will start shortly after contracts are awarded at the beginning of June, and the project is scheduled for completion in December of 2006.
