Suncor Energy Awards E&C Firms for Project Voyageur Oil Sands Bitumen Upgrader

The company will provide engineering, procurement, and construction services for the coker unit and outside battery limits (OSBL) utilities

Released Thursday, January 20, 2005

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Houston, Texas). Suncor Energy Incorporated (TSE:SU) (Calgary, Alberta) has awarded engineering and construction of the project Voyageur Phase I upgrader to Jacobs Canada Incorporated (Calgary, Alberta). Jacobs will provide engineering, procurement, and construction services for the hydroprocessing units and the sulfur recovery unit. In addition, Suncor awarded Bantrel (Calgary, Alberta) to provide engineering, procurement, and construction services for the coker unit and outside battery limits (OSBL) utilities. The project is expected to begin construction early 2006.

The process of upgrading transforms oil sands bitumen into synthetic crude oil that can later be refined into additional products. The four main steps of conventional upgrading are thermal conversion, catalytic conversion, distillation, and hydrotreating. The project Voyageur will include hydrotreaters, hydrogen plant, hydrocracker, coker, sulfur recovery unit, and supporting utilities. The project is expected to be commissioned by early 2008.

As part of its Petroleum Refining Industry coverage, Industrialinfo.com is tracking eight oil sands bitumen upgrader projects in the Western Canada region that will require an investment of $7.5 billion through the first quarter of 2008. The companies involved with these projects include Husky Energy Incorporated, BA Energy, Suncor Energy Incorporated, Opti Canada Incorporated, Synenco Energy Incorporated, ExxonMobil Canada, Canadian Natural resources Limited, and Syncrude Canada Limited.
