Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland) -- Danish wind turbine manufacturer, Vestas Wind Systems (OTC:VWDRY) (Randers, Denmark), has secured a contract for the second phase of Sweden's largest onshore windfarm project.
The manufacturer has been contracted to supply 23 units of its V112-3.0 MW wind turbine to the Jadraas wind power park, which will add another 69 megawatts (MW) to the existing 130 MW of turbines already installed by Vestas. Launched in 2010, the V112-3.0 MW turbine is designed for low and medium wind speeds.
At almost 200 MW, the Jadraas windfarm will be one of the largest onshore windfarms in Europe when it is fully completed at the start of 2013. It will generate an estimated yearly total of 570 gigawatt hours (GWh) of renewable energy.
This second contract win at Jadraas for Vestas was awarded by plant owners Arise Windpower AB (Halmstad, Sweden) and Platina Partners Ltd (London, England). The companies invested 336 million ($435 million) in 2011 to acquire the windfarm, the largest windfarm investment project in Sweden's history.
The Jadraas contract comes just weeks after Vestas secured business at another important Swedish onshore wind project. In mid-December, the company won a deal to supply 32 of its V112-3.0 MW wind turbines for the 96 MW Lemnhult project in the Vetlanda municipality in Sweden. The project will kick off in August 2012 and will be completed in August 2013. For additional information, see December 15, 2011, article - Sweden's Lemnhult Wind Project Advances.
Sweden, which is by far Europe's leading renewable energy nation, is aiming to generate 49% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020. While much of its renewable energy has traditionally supplied by hydropower, the government is actively promoting more wind power projects. Its goal is to have 6,000-7,000 MW of wind power in place by 2020, with around 4,500 MW of that coming from onshore windfarms.
