Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--One of Sweden's largest onshore wind projects has moved forward following the award of turbine contracts with Danish turbine manufacturer Vestas Wind Systems (OTC:VWDRY) (OTC:VWDRY) (Randers, Denmark).
Project developer, Stena Renewable AB (Gothenburg, Sweden), has ordered 32 turbines for the 96 megawatt (MW) Lemnhult project in the Vetlanda municipality in Sweden. The project will kick off in August 2012 and will be completed in August 2013. The windfarm, which will use Vestas' V112-3.0 MW wind turbines, will be capable of generating 270 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of renewable energy.
The V112-3.0 MW turbine is designed for low and medium wind speeds and was originally launched in 2010.
The contract includes supply, installation and commissioning of the turbines, as well as a 15-year full scope service and maintenance agreement, with production-based availability warranty. Vestas first started working with Stena Renewable in 2006.
"The Stena Lemnhult windfarm, located in the most southern of Sweden's new price areas, is our largest investment so far," explained Göran Danielsson, managing director of Stena Renewable. "With almost 270 GWh of yearly production, corresponding to 70% of total power demand in Vetlanda, the plant makes Vetlanda a leading renewable energy supplier among Sweden's municipalities."
"The order is a significant stepping stone in the continuing expansion of renewable energy in Sweden," added Klaus Steen Mortensen, president of Vestas Northern Europe. "Stena Renewable is a very important partner for us in the Scandinavian region".
Sweden is Europe's leading country when it comes to renewable energy, with more than 44% of its total energy demand covered by renewable sources. According to the European Union's Renewables Directive, Sweden will have to generate 49% of its final energy consumption from renewable sources by 2020. In 2010, the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) noted that Sweden had 2,163 MW of wind energy capacity. By 2020, wind energy is expected to reach 6,000-7,000 MW, with offshore wind accounting for 2,000-3,000 MW.
