Being a leader in wind-power development in the U.S, Texas continues with the multi-phase Sweetwater Windfarm project in Sweetwater, Texas.

Released Friday, September 28, 2007

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Texas already set a record for having the world’s largest windfarm: the 735-megawatt (MW) Horse Hollow Windfarm (Tuscola, Texas), which became operational in late 2005, developed by FPL Energy LLC (Juno Beach, Florida).

Being a leader in wind-power development in the U.S, Texas continues with the multi-phase Sweetwater Windfarm project in Sweetwater, Texas. The first phase of the 37.5 MW project was developed by DKR Development LLC (Houston, Texas) with 25 1.5 MW wind turbine/generators provided by GE Wind Energy. Construction began in fall 2003 and was completed by the end of the year.

DKR Energy’s partners are Babcock & Brown LP (Sweetwater, Texas), and Catamount Energy Corporation (Rutland, Vermont), both of which are equity investors of the project that joined to form Sweetwater Wind LLC.

The 91.5 MW Phase II and 120 MW Phase III projects, both with GE wind turbine/generators, were completed in 2005.

Construction began in the fall of 2006 on the 238.5 MW Phase IV (A&B) addition, with 135 1 MW wind turbines by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and was completed in the summer of this year.

Thirty-five 2.3 MW Siemens wind turbine/generators are being constructed as part of the Phase V addition to the windfarm. With Renewable Energy System North America LLC providing electrical maintenance services, completion is expected at the end of this year.

Phase VI with 80.5 MW with Siemens wind turbines are scheduled for construction in early 2008 as soon as Phase V becomes operational. M A Mortenson (Minneapolis, Minnesota) will provide general contracting services.

Other large windfarms in Texas include the 353 MW Buffalo Gap Windfarm (Buffalo Gap, Texas), the 260 MW King Mountain Windfarm (McCamey, Texas) and the 254 MW Roscoe Windfarm (Roscoe, Texas) with completion end of 2007.
