Canada Invokes 1977 Pipeline Treaty Over Line 5 Dispute - Canada on Monday formally invoked a 1977 treaty with the U.S. to request bilateral negotiations over Enbridge Incorporated's (NYSE: ENB) (Calgary, Alberta) Line 5, escalating a long-running dispute over one of Canada's major oil export pipelines. Line 5 ships 540,000 barrels per day of crude oil and refined products from Superior, Wisconsin, to Sarnia, Ontario, but the state of Michigan ordered Enbridge to shut it down due to worries a leak could develop in a four-mile section running beneath the Straits of Mackinac in the Great Lakes. Enbridge ignored Michigan's order, and the sides are embroiled in a legal battle. The government of Canada has been pushing counterparts in the U.S. to intervene, and Monday's move marks a step up in its efforts to help safeguard the pipeline. (Reuters)
Nord Stream 2 Starts Filling Pipeline with Gas for Tests - Russia and Europe's Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline has started filling one of its two pipelines with natural gas for tests, said the operator. "The first string will be filled gradually to build the required inventory and pressure as a prerequisite for later technical tests," the Nord Stream 2 operating company said on Monday. Pre-commissioning steps for the second string are ongoing, it added. (Reuters)
CORPORATE
Stonepeak to Buy Teekay LNG in $6.2 Billion Deal - Investment firm Stonepeak (New York, New York) said on Monday it would buy Teekay LNG Partners (NYSE:TGP) (Bermuda) in a deal worth $6.2 billion, as it looks to take advantage of rising global demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG). The companies expect to close the deal by the end of 2021. (Reuters)
