Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The 900-megawatt (MW), $1 billion+ coal-fired Sandy Creek Energy Station near Riesel, Texas, has reached the halfway mark and is on schedule for completion in mid-2012 completion.

Site work for the project began in 2007, while actual plant construction began in the spring of 2008. The pulverized coal-fired project is owned by three companies:

• 575 MW by Sandy Creek Energy Associates LP (St. Louis, Missouri), a subsidiary of LS Power Group (East Brunswick, New Jersey)
• 225 MW by Brazos Electric Cooperative Incorporated (Waco, Texas)
• 100 MW by the Lower Colorado River Authority (Austin, Texas)

Black & Veatch (Kansas City, Missouri) is performing engineering on the project, while Zachry Construction (San Antonio, Texas) is performing construction services. The steam turbine/generator is being provided by Toshiba Corporation (TYO:6502) (Tokyo, Japan), while IHI Corporation (TYO:7013) (Tokyo) is supplying the boiler for the project. The boiler will have a baghouse to control particulates, a flue-gas desulfurization unit for SO2 emissions and selective catalytic reduction to reduce NOx emissions.
