Top Projects by Industry for 2007 in the Southwest Market Region
Easily leading all other projects as the largest single expenditure in the region planned for next year, are plans for a grassroot coal gasification plant in the Alternative Fuels...-Includes 2007 Southwest Market Region Spending Analysis Chart
Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Total capital and maintenance spending during 2007 for the Southwest market region is forecast to total over $45.3 billion. Taking a closer look at this spending and recognizing the largest single project for each of the twelve industries monitored by Industrial Info, twelve projects alone represent an estimated $11 billion of the total spending forecast in the region next year. The Southwest market region consists of Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Arkansas, a region that is home to over 4,500 operational plant locations.
Easily leading all other projects as the largest single expenditure in the region planned for next year, are plans for a grassroot coal gasification plant in the Alternative Fuels Industry to be located in Geismar, Louisiana. Synfuel, Incorporated (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) is developing this project and working with SNC-Lavalin GDS, Incorporated (Houston, Texas) on site studies for this nearly $5 billion project in which the first phases of construction could begin next year, pending approvals. Plans for this new plant join a growing list of similar initiatives across the United States to produce hydrocarbon fuels and electricity from coal and petroleum coke.
The next top projects planned for 2007 also top the one billion dollar investment mark and represent the Power and Industrial Manufacturing Industries. TXU Power, Incorporated (Dallas, Texas) is planning for a late summer kick off of two new pulverized coal-fired generation units capable of producing 1,380 megawatts of power, see related Industry Alert titled: Everything is Bigger in Texas Even Growth of Power Generation. Another project worthy of mention is the first phase of the Northwest corridor light rail system planned by Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) that is expected to cost an estimated $1.2 billion.
Each of the other industries has equally impressive plans for major projects in the region next year. The Chemical and Petroleum Refining Industries will spend a combined $6.1 billion next year, continuing a strong trend of spending over the past five years. Many of largest environmental compliance projects mandated in the region have been completed in the last couple of years making room for growth and expansion dollars in these industries. Investments for the production and transport of natural gas continue to gain momentum with an estimated $7.5 billion in capital and maintenance planned to begin construction next year.
