Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Coming off of a very strong first-quarter performance, the expectations for an even better second quarter are quickly building for the Chemical Processing Industry (CPI) of the United States and Canada. The total investment value (TIV) of CPI projects planned to begin construction during the second quarter so far totals more than $1.3 billion, from nearly 280 individual projects. A key to the success of the quarter will likely come down to the progress of the top 10 biggest projects getting under way on schedule.

The single largest capital project to get under way during the second quarter is planned by K2 Pure Solutions (Toronto, Ontario) for the addition of a new chlorine and caustic soda plant in Pittsburg, California, at the site of Dow Chemical Company (NYSE:DOW). DPR Construction Incorporated (Redwood City, California) has been selected as the general contractor for this estimated $100 million project, with the complete startup of the new plant expected by the summer of 2011. At the same site, K2 Pure is also planning to construct a sodium hypochlorite unit that is expected to get under way in the second quarter.

Considered the largest single-chemical maintenance project in the quarter, LyondellBasell Industries (Morris, Illinois) is planning a major maintenance turnaround of the company's ethylene plant in Morris during May. This turnaround coincides with several very significant ongoing capital projects at the plant site that are scheduled to be completed this summer. In total, more than 186 maintenance turnarounds are scheduled to take place during the quarter, totaling an estimated $509 million in spending.

Other contributors to the top 10 projects include plans by INVISTA Incorporated (Wichita, Kansas) for emission reductions at the company's Victoria, Texas, plant. Air Liquide Industrial US LP (Houston, Texas) is adding a third air-separation unit at its Geismar, Louisiana, plant. DSM Dyneema LLC (Greenville, North Carolina) is adding a a seventh fiber line at its Greenville plant. Formosa Plastics Corporation USA (Livingston, New Jersey) is expected to get under way with a long-planned expansion of its polyvinyl chloride plant in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Hazco Environmental Services (Calgary, Alberta) plans to begin civil construction on a grassroot sulfur-forming plant in Bruderheim, Alberta. Lastly, Toda America Incorporated (Schaumburg, Illinois) plans to begin the first phase of expansion plans for a metal oxide plant in Battle Creek, Michigan.
