Toyota Selects Engineer for $250 Million Engine Plant Expansion in Alabama

Plans are to add 400,000 square feet to the existing plant's 440,000 square feet and install a new V-8 production line.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America (TMMNA), a wholly owned subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation (NYSE:TM), has selected Giffels Design Build Incorporated (Toronto, Ontario) as the engineering contractor for a $250 million truck engine plant expansion in Huntsville, Alabama.

Plans are to add 400,000 square feet to the existing plant's 440,000 square feet and install a new V-8 production line. The expansion will increase the plant's V-8 production from 270,000 Units per year to 400,000. The increase in production will be used for the new Tundra pickups from Toyota San Antonio (TMMTX) and Sequoias from Toyota Indiana (TMMI). A general contractor will be selected in February 2005. Construction is slated to begin in April 2005, with completion scheduled for December of 2006. Approximately 500 jobs will be created.

A V-6 engine line expansion is currently under construction and is expected to be complete in April of 2005. The V-6 will used for the production of Tundras from NUMMI (California) and Tacomas from TMMBaja (Baja California, Mexico).

Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America (TMMNA), headquartered in Erlanger, Kentucky, oversees the North American operations of Toyota Motor Corporation. U.S. plants are located in Alabama, Indiana, Kentucky, Texas, and West Virginia, along with two plants in Canada and one in Mexico. Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Alabama, Incorporated (TMMAL) was established in 2001 for the manufacturing of V8 engines for the Tundra. TMMAL presently has an annual capacity of 120,000 engines. It is the first Toyota plant outside of Japan to build a V8 engine. In 2001, TMMAL will begin production of V6 engines for the Tacoma and Tundra with additional capacity of 130,000 engines, bringing the total capacity to 250,000 engines.
