TransAlta Permanently Shuts Down Units at Sundance Power Station

Researched by Industrial Information Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--TransAlta Corporation (NYSE:TAC) (Calgary, Alberta) will permanently shut down units 1 and 2 at the company's Sundance Power Station in Duffield, Alberta, because they did not meet Alberta Boiler Safety Association (ABSA) approval.

During the outage of the units, which began in December last year, TransAlta observed that the boilers on the two units were not operating within design limits, forcing an inquiry into their safety.

Sundance Unit 3 is undergoing a planned outage until March, while units 4, 5 and 6 are running at full power.

Sundance Power Station began commercial operations in 1970 with Unit 1. In 1978, Unit 6 began operating. TransAlta plans to install five natural gas turbines at the power station between 2012 and 2015, providing 800 megawatts of power.
