Transcontinental Incorporated Opens $200 Million Commercial Printing Plant in California

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Transcontinental Incorporated (TSX:TCL.A) (Montreal, Quebec) has completed construction and recently opened a $200 million commercial printing plant in Fremont, California.

The new plant included construction of a 388,000-square-foot building and the installation of new ultramodern presses. Groundbreaking occurred on April 16, 2008, and operations began on July 6 of this year. The plant is expected to print 270,000 copies of The San Francisco Chronicle from Monday to Saturday and 360,000 copies on Sunday. Transcontinental signed a 15-year agreement with the Hearst Corporation (New York, New York) to print the newspaper and related inserts, which has resulted in the Chronicle's expecting to close its two remaining printing plants in San Francisco and Union City, California.

Kwan Henmi (San Francisco) provided architectural and planning services, while McCarthy Building Company (St. Louis, Missouri) provided general construction services for the new plant.

Transcontinental Incorporated is considered to be the largest printer in Canada and the sixth largest in North America, providing printing, publishing and marketing services. As of 2007, Transcontinental employed 15,000 people in Canada, the United States and Mexico, with reported revenues of $2.4 billion in 2008.
