Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Tropical Cyclone Seroja, a Category 3 storm, caused the ports of Geraldton and Ashburton and surrounding airports to shut down this weekend along the West Australia coastline. The region is still on red alert due to ongoing flash floods, treacherous ocean conditions and destructive winds of up to 93 miles per hour.

Operational mines in proximity of the West Australia coastline and in the Gascoyne region are mainly salt and mineral sands facilities, such as Rio Tinto's (NYSE:RIO) (London, England) Lake MacLeod Solar Salt Mine, Mitsui & Company Limited's (Tokyo, Japan) Onslow and Shark Bay solar evaporation salt mines and Iluka Resources' (Perth, Australia) Cataby Mineral Sands Mine.

The tropical cyclone also may have affected other projects and operational sites, such as Kalamazoo Resources' (Perth) Ashburton Gold Project, Silver Lake Resources' (South Perth) Deflector gold-copper mine and Rio Tinto's Mesa A iron ore mine. However, there have been no immediate reports of damage to the mining areas. Industrial Info continues to monitor the situation.
