Turner Industries to Construct Lake Charles Gasification Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Lake Charles Cogeneration LLC (Houston, Texas), owned by Leucadia National Corporation (NYSE:LUK) (New York, New York), has selected Turner Industries Group LLC (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) to construct the estimated $1 billion-plus gasification plant in Louisiana. This is by far the largest capital power project ever constructed in Calcasieu County, where the plant will be located.

The facility will include a 300-megawatt steam turbine/generator and associated equipment such as a fuel-handling system, gasifiers, air separation system. The facility will use General Electric's (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) gasification technology to produce synthetic natural gas made from petroleum coke, a refining byproduct.

Black & Veatch (Kansas City, Missouri) is providing engineering services. Construction is set to kick off in spring or early summer of 2009, with completion scheduled by 2012.
