Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--China Huaneng Group (CHNG) (Beijing), the biggest power producer in China, and China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group Company Limited (CGNPG) (Shenzhen), a leading nuclear power producer in China, signed an agreement on November 18, 2007, to jointly build the Huaneng Shandong Shidaowan nuclear power plant in Beijing. Zhang Tingke, Deputy General Manager of CHNG, and Zhang Shanming, Deputy General Manager of CGNPG, signed the agreement on behalf of both parties.

According to the agreement, the companies will jointly build the plant, which has a total planned capacity of four 1,000-megawatt (MW) pressurized-water reactor-type nuclear power units in two phases.

This is an important endeavor for the Chinese power giants in carrying out the nation's midterm and long-term nuclear power plans. The signing of the agreement marks that CHNG is actively participating in the construction of a nuclear power project furnished with a pressurized water reactor in addition to the nation's key project, the demonstration nuclear power station with a high temperature air-cooled reactor.

The Huaneng Shandong Shidaowan nuclear power plant is in Rongcheng City, a city under the jurisdiction of Weihai City in northern China's Shandong Province, where there is less civil work, less resettlement and sound transportation conditions, making it an excellent site for nuclear power. In addition to 3,800 MW of nuclear units with high-temperature air-cooled reactors planned, the site is also capable to build 4,000 MW of nuclear power units with pressurized water reactors. Presently, the pre-feasibility study of the project has been completed, and the feasibility study is in progress.
