Two Large-Scale Solid Fuel Fired Power Plant Projects Moving Ahead in Louisiana

Cleco and NRG are developing these solid fuel projects due to the high and fluxating cost of cleaner burning natural gas.

Released Wednesday, August 24, 2005

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Two large power plant expansions are being developed in Louisiana involving solid fuel, mainly coal and to a lesser extent petroleum coke, and biomass instead of natural gas. Both projects are being designed to use clean coal technology.

Cleco Power, a subsidiary of Cleco Corporation (NYSE:CNL ) (Pineville, Louisiana), has announced that it intends to add a solid fuel unit #3 660-megawatt (MW) generator at its 1,000-MW coal and natural gas fired Rodemacher Power Station near Boyce, Louisiana. Cleco plans to install a steam turbine/generator powered by a boiler equipped to utilize petroleum coke, lignite, coal, and biomass.

A second project being developed by Louisiana Generating LLC, a subsidiary of NRG Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NRG ) (Princeton, New Jersey), has received an air permit for a unit #4 675-MW expansion at its 1,730-MW coal-fired Big Cajun II Generation Station in New Roads, Louisiana.

NRG plans to install a steam turbine/generator powered by a low sulfur coal supercritical boiler.

The NRG and Cleco projects will each cost about $1 billion and will employ about 1,100 personnel during construction. Cleco’s project will require an additional eighty permanent positions, while NRG’s will require about forty.

Cleco and NRG are developing these solid fuel projects due to the high and fluxating cost of cleaner burning natural gas. These completed projects will improve the mix of generation in Louisiana, providing for a cheaper, more dependable, and reliable source of energy.
