Unplanned Outage Removes 264 Megawatts from Chile's National Grid

Researched by Industrial Info Resources Latin America (Cordoba, Argentina)--Chile's SING (Grand North Interconnected System) grid has been operating with 264 megawatts (MW) less than usual since April 12 due to an unplanned outage of one of the coal-fired units at the Angamos power station.

The 528-MW Angamos coal-fired facility, owned by AES Gener (Santiago, Chile), is 10 kilometers from the city of Mejillones, in the northern Antofagasta region (Region II) of Chile.

Unit 2 was taken offline because of a failure in the flue gas desulfurization system. The unit is expected to return online May 17.

The unit is equipped with a 264-MW Ansaldo condensing steam turbine and a Doosan Heavy Industries watertube boiler. The Angamos power station has been operational since August 2011.
