U.S. Northeast, New England to See More than $1.6 Billion in Fourth-Quarter Power Project Starts
Among the various market regions in the U.S., perhaps the U.S. Northeast and New England shows the greatest diversity in the types of Power Industry projects planned to kick off in the upcoming fourth quarter of 2020.
Among the largest projects is Brookfield Asset Management's (Toronto, Ontario) 125-megawatt (MW) windfarm repower project in Cohocton, New York, about 60 miles south of Rochester. The project entails replacing 50 vintage Clipper wind turbines with 50 General Electric (NYSE:GE) (GE) 2.5-MW turbines. The $150 million project is expected to kick off early in the quarter and be completed by next summer. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
In addition to wind, a few hydro and solar projects are planned to kick off in the region in the upcoming quarter. In Lewiston, New York, in the west of the state, New York Power Authority (White Plains, New York) will perform a controls upgrade at the Robert Moses Niagara hydropower plant, near Niagara Falls. A new integrated digital controls system and electrical equipment will be installed for 13 turbines as part of a plant modernization. Burns & McDonnell Incorporated (Kansas City, Missouri) is providing engineering, procurement and construction services on the project, which is expected to be completed in mid-2023. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Among the solar projects planned to kick off is ENGIE North America Incorporated's (Houston, Texas) 80-MW Adams photovoltaic plant in York Springs, Pennsylvania, 100 miles west of Pittsburgh. The project is expected to be completed next summer. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Several smaller solar projects of 20 MW or less also are planned to kick off in the region, including a couple from Conti Enterprises Incorporated (Edison, New Jersey) in New York. The 20-MW Magruder solar plant will be built in Gardiner, about 80 miles north of New York City, and the 20-MW Janis photovoltaic plant will be built in Cortland, 30 miles south of Syracuse. Both projects are expected to be completed in the first half of 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Magruder and Janis plants.
Also on the books to kick off in the upcoming quarter is a grassroot 175-MW combined-cycle plant in Towanda Township, Pennsylvania. The facility is owned by Gateway Green Energy Holdings LLC (Spring, Texas), and POWER Engineers Incorporated (Oradell, New Jersey) is providing engineering. The facility will include two 50-MW GE combustion turbines with heat-recovery steam generators and one GE steam turbine generator. The project is expected to wrap up in the first half of 2023. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Home to the natural gas-rich Marcellus Shale, other gas-fired projects in Pennsylvania include Riverstone Holdings LLC's (New York, New York) plans to convert two coal-fired units at the Montour Power Plant in Washingtonville to be co-fired with natural gas. Worley (North Sydney, Australia) is providing engineering on the project, which is expected to be completed next summer. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
