Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking more than $1.8 billion in planned Power Industry project starts in the U.S. Southeast market region, which includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee. Florida, with more than $1 billion in planned activity, leads in terms of project value.

Attachment Click on the image at right for a breakdown of planned first-quarter power project starts in the Southeast region.

Among the largest projects planned to kick off in the upcoming quarter is Seminole Electric Cooperative Incorporated's (Tampa, Florida) planned Seminole natural-gas fired plant in Palatka, Florida. The 1,028-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle plant will be built at the site of an existing power plant and will use General Electric (NYSE:GE) equipment. The Industrial Company (Cumming, Georgia) is providing engineering, procurement and construction services. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

The Southeast is one of the leading destinations for solar power in the U.S., and a few such projects feature in the region's upcoming activity. In Warner Robins, Georgia, about 100 miles southeast of Atlanta, Southern Company (NYSE:SO) subsidiary Georgia Power Company (Atlanta) plans to begin construction on a 128-MW solar farm, which will built next to Robins Air Force Base. The photovoltaic panels will be on a fixed-tilt, single-axis tracker system. The project is expected to be completed in early 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

In Newton, Georgia, Capital Power Corporation (Boston, Massachusetts) plans to begin construction on a 29-MW solar station using fixed-tilt, thin-film panels. The project is expected to be completed in third-quarter 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Hydropower also features in the region's renewable activity. In Chattanooga, Tennessee, Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) (Knoxville, Tennessee) will perform a modernization project on units 1 and 2 at the Chickamauga Hydropower Station. The project entails replacing two 39.9-MW hydroturbines with newer technology and performing generator rewinds to improve efficiency and extend service life. Voith Hydro Incorporated (York, Pennsylvania) is performing design engineering. The project is expected to be completed in the first half of 2022. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

While grassroot coal-fired activity has ground to a halt in the U.S., the Southeast is home to several maintenance projects at the region's existing coal-fired plants. Among these is Southern Company subsidiary Alabama Power Company's (Birmingham, Alabama) planned maintenance outage at the 884-MW Unit 4 at the Ernest C. Gaston Power Station in Wilsonville, Alabama. The outage is expected to last approximately 42 days and will include major overhauls and inspections to the steam turbine and boiler. Day & Zimmerman (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is the contractor. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

The region also is planning five nuclear refueling outages in the quarter in all the states except Mississippi under the auspices of Southern Company, TVA and NextEra Energy Resources (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida). In Alabama, TVA is planning a refueling outage for the 1,105-MW Unit 3 at the Browns Ferry Power Station near Decatur, in the north of the state. Day & Zimmerman is the contractor. The outage is expected to last 43 days, spanning February and March. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
