Released Monday, March 19, 2007

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Miami, Florida has been selected as the site for a regional distribution hub planned for the United States Postal Service (USPS) (Arlington, Virginia). Construction costs are estimated in the $70-$100 million range.

Plans are to construct a 625,000 square-foot regional distribution center on 27 to 36 acres, including a 50,000 square-foot office area. Now that a site has been selected, USPS is expected to select a design-build firm this fall that will begin preliminary design in October 2007 and will guide the project through engineering and construction. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2008, with overall completion slated for the end of 2009 or early 2010.

USPS is a government agency that handles cards, letters and packages sent from sea to sea. They deliver over 210 billion pieces of mail each year to over 144 million addresses relying on postage and fees to fund their operations. As of 2006, there were approximately 696,138 employees.

Industrial Info is currently tracking three other sorting hub facilities planned by the United States Postal Service valued at over $330 million. One sorting hub located in Pontiac, Michigan, valued at roughly $224 million, is currently under construction. Walbridge/Teng (Detroit, Michigan) is providing engineering and construction services. Another hub located in Johnson Creek, Wisconsin is still in the planning and early design stage. This sorting hub is valued at roughly $50 million. A third sorting hub located in Scarborough, Maine was completed roughly six months ago. The sorting hub was valued at approximately $58 million for a 428,000 square-foot facility to replace an existing facility. Lockwood Green (New York, New York) and Korte Construction Company (Saint Louis, Missouri) provided engineering and construction services.
