Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Delhi, India)--Vopak Horizon Fujairah Limited (VHFL) (Fujairah, United Arab Emirates), operators of the first independent onshore oil terminal outside the Arabian Gulf in Fujairah, are running behind deadline on the Phase VI expansion of the terminal.
According to company officials, the expansion project was to increase the terminal's capacity from 1.5 million cubic meters to 2.1 million cubic meters and was expected to be completed by January 24, 2012. However, the completion date is now being push out by another two months. Even this later date may prove elusive because of further costs and time over-runs.
The Vopak Horizon Fujairah Limited terminal initially had a capacity of only 500,000 cubic meters. Currently terminal holds more than 48 steel tanks ranging from 6,000 to 60,000 cubic meters, adding to total capacity to 1.5 million cubic meters.
Several hopes are being pinned on the terminal, as Fujairah intends to grow into the premier petroleum hub of the Middle East region. The expansion will contribute to more career opportunities for UAE nationals in the Northern Emirates in the highly rewarding oil and gas sector.
The terminal can accommodate tankers of up to 175,000 dead weight tonnes and complies with the most stringent safety and environmental standards.
Vopak Horizon Fujairah Limited is a joint venture of the Emirates National Oil Company (Dubai), Royal Vopak NV (Rotterdam, Netherlands), the government of Fujairah and Kuwait's Independent Petroleum Group.
The terminal has been awarded ISO-9002 and ISO-14001 certification and is designed to handle a wide range of petroleum products, including light and middle distillates, heavy ends and various blend components.
