Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In December 2008, Wartsila (HEL:WRTBV) (Helsinki, Finland) signed a contract to supply equipment and to provide engineering for a power station owned by Administracion Nacional de Usinas y Transmisiones Electricas (Uruguay).
The Jose Battle y Ordonez Plant, which began operation in 1960, currently has four operational steam units with a total power output of 353 megawatts (MW). The facility supplies baseload electricity to the national grid and is located in Montevideo, Uruguay's capital.
The project entails the installation of eight previously used Wartsila 12V46 internal combustion engines that have been overhauled and rehabilitated by Wartsila Services that will add a further 80 MW of capacity. The eight units will be installed next to the plant in an area where there were two turbines that were removed several years ago -- Units 1 and 2. The plant now consists of Units 3, 4, 5 and 6.
The contract includes a two-year operations and maintenance agreement with the option of extending the contract for an additional two years. Construction recently began, and completion is estimated for the end of October 2009.
The order, with a value of about $45 million, was placed by a contracting group, a consortium made up of two major Uruguay-based construction companies, Teyma Uruguay SA and Saceem.
