Looking back on 2020, Western Europe's Metals & Minerals Industry has focused on improving the manufacturing process to meet carbon neutrality targets.

By incorporating direct reduced iron (DRI) plants where sponge iron is produced by direct reduction of iron ore and green hydrogen is used as a reducing agent, steel producers are working toward reducing carbon emissions.

Thyssenkrupp is building a DRI plant with an integrated melting unit at its Duisburg site in Germany. Similarly, Salzgitter is working toward construction of a DRI plant with an upstream hydrogen electrolyzer at the deepwater port of Wilhelmshaven, Germany.

Oxyfuel combustion technology, where pure oxygen is introduced into the kiln system, also has gained importance. European cement producers like HeidelbergCement AG, SCHWENK Zement KG, Buzzi Unicem - Dyckerhoff and Vicat have founded the joint research corporation, CI4C - Cement Innovation for Climate, for this purpose. Likewise, Holcim Deutschland is working on the Westküste100 green hydrogen project.

Lastly, glass manufacturers are working continuously to reduce their carbon footprint. Owens-Illinois has launched new glassmaking technology, with plans to install a new furnace at its Holzminden plant in Germany.
