Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Energy control systems company Woodward Governor Company (NASDAQ:WGOV) (Fort Collins, Colorado) recently signed a supply agreement with wind turbine company REpower Systems AG (ETR:RPW) (Hamburg, Germany) under which Woodward will supply power converters for 48 offshore wind turbines, each with a capacity of 6 megawatts (MW). The wind turbines will be used in the 295-MW Nordsee Ost offshore windfarm to be developed in the German Bight of the North Sea. The windfarm will be developed between 2011 and 2013.

Woodward will complete the order for the CONCYCLE power converters from its manufacturing facility in Kempen, Germany. Woodward has been supplying CONCYCLE converters for REpower wind turbines for more than eight years, and 5-MW and 6-MW turbine class converters since 2004.

Power converters control the power and voltage from the wind turbine generator, allowing frequency and voltage to remain constant and unaffected by the variable rotation speed of the wind turbines. This functionality makes power converters a critical component in the delivery of stable and high-quality power to the grid. The CONCYCLE converter's ability to ensure uniform power output, regardless of the load range, guarantees longer turbine life and power availability. The converter is fitted with reactive power management so that the system can comply with the requirements of the present and future grid requirements, even when there is a mains failure.

The REpower wind turbines to be used at the Nordsee Ost windfarm are based on the proven technology of the company's 5M class of turbines. The 48 units have a total capacity of about 295 MW. The 5M turbine has a rated power of 5 MW and a rotor diameter of 126 meters. It is one of the world's largest and most powerful wind turbines. The introduction of the 5M turbine in 2005 brought new standards for the economic feasibility of windfarms, especially offshore windfarms, although the turbines are suitable for both onshore and offshore installations. The offshore model is designed to cope with the severe conditions of the high seas.

Woodward manufactures actuators, electronic and hydromechanical controls, fuel-delivery systems, valves and related components. The two major markets served by the company are aircraft engine systems and industrial controls. The company's systems and components control and optimize the performance of gas and steam turbines, wind turbines, electrical power systems, military and commercial aircraft, ground vehicles and other equipment. Woodward's customers include original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) as well as end users.

Founded in 1870, the company has plants and offices in 28 locations, including Brazil, China, Germany, India, Japan, South Korea, the Netherlands, Poland, the U.K. and the U.S. Other than that, the company functions through authorized dealers, distributors and suppliers across Africa, the Asia Pacific region, Europe, the Middle East and both the Americas.
