(Moura, Portugal), a subsidiary of the Spanish power company Acciona Energy (Sarriguren, Spain), inaugurated the world's largest photovoltaic solar power plant in Portugal, the 46-megawatt (MW) Central Solar de Amareleja. The $355 million solar power plant was built in 13 months and covers a total area of 250 hectares. The plant is located in the Alentejo region, which has one of the highest solar radiation levels in Portugal.

At the end of 2006, Acciona Energy signed a contract with photovoltaic products manufacturer Yingli Green Energy Holding Company (NYSE:YGE) (Baoding, China) to help build and supply the 262,080 polycrystalline photovoltaic modules which are supported by 2,520 of Acciona's single-axis Buskil solar trackers. The solar power plant will provide up to 30,000 Portuguese homes with clean energy and will be connected to the country's national grid through a 60-kilovolt transmission line.

In January 2007, Acciona Energy acquired Amper Central Solar S.A., the power company that owns and operates the Central Solar de Amareleja. Acciona Energy has 68 MW of solar installed capacity in Spain and is a world leader in solar and renewable energy.
