Zilkha Renewable Energy (Houston, Texas), a privately held company, has started construction of the 74.5-megawatt (MW) Blue Canyon Windfarm. This is the first phase of a multiphase project located near Medicine Park, Comanche County, Oklahoma.
The new windfarm's construction commenced in May and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2003. The windfarm will consist of (45) NEG Micon NM62 (1.65MW) wind turbine/generator sets being installed by engineering and construction firm MA Mortenson Company (Minneapolis, Minnesota). The windfarm will supply the power from (39) units to Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (Anadarko, Oklahoma); the other six unit's output will be available to the grid.
The Zilkha's, who had been in the energy business on the oil side for many years, started Zilkha Renewable Energy in 1999. They have windfarms in operation or in development in several areas of the United States.
