Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Global power company Siemens Energy (Erlangen, Germany), the energy sector of electrical and electronics company Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany), has been awarded a turnkey contract by Dutch utility company Nuon (Amsterdam, Netherlands) for the construction of the 435-megawatt (MW) Hemweg 9 combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant in Amsterdam. Nuon is part Swedish energy company Vattenfall AB (Stockholm, Sweden). Since 2007, this is the fourth CCGT order from the Netherlands that Siemens has been awarded. The other three were for the CCGT projects of Enecogen, Rijnmond, and Sloe.

The gas-fired Hemweg 9 power plant will operate at 59% efficiency with low nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. When commissioned in late 2012, the power project is expected to supply power to more than 750,000 households. The project will also be capable of supplying heat. The scope of the contract includes supplying the main components of the power plant, which include an SST5-5000 steam turbine, an SGT5-4000F gas turbine, an SPPA-T3000 instrumentation and control system, a hydrogen-cooled generator, and 100% of the electrical equipment. Siemens will also offer long-term maintenance on the steam turbine, the gas turbine and the generator. The investment decision regarding the project is expected to be announced soon.

Once Hemweg 9 is commissioned, natural gas-fired Hemweg 7 will be closed, although the units gas turbine will continue to be used. The new project will be developed at the same site where the 630-MW coal-fired Hemweg 8 operates. Since the site already has the required connections, infrastructure and cooling water, it is the appropriate site to develop Hemweg 9. The necessary building and environmental permits have already been obtained.

The 511-MW Hemweg 7 was originally set up as a conventional gas-fired plant in 1979. In 1988, the capacity of the plant was increased by adding a gas turbine to the existing steam turbine, effectively making the facility a CCGT plant. Depending on the power required, the gas turbine can be used alone or with the steam turbine. Hemweg 7 complies with emission regulations and is fuel-efficient because of its low-NOx burners.

According to Michael Suess, CEO of the Fossil Power Generation Division of Siemens Energy, the new order demonstrates that combined-cycle power plants play an important role in European utilities because of their ability to meet strict environmental requirements, and to ensure load balancing with rising wind-based feed-in. The company said that it has sufficient experience in developing power plants based on F-class gas turbine technology, which can attain more than 59% efficiency. Such plants feature advanced fast-cycling characteristics and fast-start ability. High-efficiency combined cycle power plants form an integral part of Siemens' environmental portfolio. In fiscal year 2009, the company's revenue from the portfolio exceeded 23 billion euros ($31 billion), successfully establishing Siemens as a global supplier of eco-friendly technologies.
