Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Exelon Corporation (NYSE:EXC) (Chicago, Illinois) is working with two groups that plan to bid on Saudi Arabia's nuclear build program. The project envisions 17.6 gigawatts (GW) of nuclear power generation by 2032, as part of a strategy to diversify Saudi Arabia's domestic energy sources. The build could involve 16 reactors for water desalination and power generation.

Westinghouse Electric Company (Monroeville, Pennsylvania), Toshiba Corporation (OTC:TOSBF) (Tokyo, Japan) and Exelon Nuclear Partners (EPN) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to create a joint venture proposal for the construction of a nuclear power plant at King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (KA.CARE), which is the Saudi government body established to develop the country's alternative energy sources.

Toshiba and ENP were the initial partners in a team formed in July 2010. Now, with Westinghouse, a Toshiba company, on board, they will present the Westinghouse AP1000 plant technology to the Saudis. The group also will present Toshiba's advanced boiling water reactor (ABWR) technology package.

The second joint venture is GE Hitachi (GEH) (Wilmington, North Carolina) and ENP. It will promote the feasibility of ENP's advanced boiling water (ABWR) technology and engineering, procurement, and project management experience, while demonstrating Exelon's experience in operations and other services.

GEH is promoting its economic simplified boiling water reactor (ESBWR) and AWBR design, which are under evaluation at KA.CARE. The 1,500-MW ESBWR offers passive safety systems. Additionally, it can cool with no operator intervention or on-site or off-site power for more than seven days.

EPN is a division of Exelon Generation LLC, which is the largest nuclear fleet operator in the U.S., with 18 reactors at 11 power stations and a capacity of 19,000 MW. The company's total owned/installed generation capacity is 35,000 MW.
