Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Atlantic Canada has the smallest total investment value (TIV) of any region in Canada, but several of its projects are among the most watched in the nation. Industrial Info is tracking $52.38 billion in active and unconfirmed projects in the region, all but a small portion of which are in the Oil & Gas Production, Metals & Minerals, and Power industries. Only about $366 million are expected to kick off before the end of the year, but a little more than $14 billion are expected to kick off between March 2015 and April 2016.

Atlantic Canada includes New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
By far the biggest project in the region is Pieridae Energy Limited's (Halifax, Nova Scotia) construction of the $10 billion, two-phase Goldboro Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Production Plant in Stormont, Nova Scotia. The first phase of the project, expected to kick off in the third quarter of 2015, involves building an LNG facility to produce 5 million metric tons per year of LNG, with a 160-MW turbine and two storage tanks, each with 210,000 cubic meters capacity. The second phase, expected to kick off in 2018, involves the construction of a second 5 million-metric-ton-per-year train, and another turbine and a third storage tank site with the same capacities. The site will source its feedstock from the Maritimes and Northeast Pipeline, owned by Spectra Pipeline, a subsidiary of Spectra Energy (NYSE:SE) (Houston, Texas).

The Power Industry's biggest project in the region is Nalcor Energy's (St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador) $3.8 billion construction of the Gull Island Hydro Station in Churchill Falls, Newfoundland and Labrador. The project involves building a concrete-faced rock fill dam, including penstocks and a powerhouse, that will utilize five 450-MW Francis hydro turbine generators for a total capacity of 2,250 MW. It is expected to kick off in the first quarter of 2016.

Newfoundland and Labrador also is hosting the Metals & Minerals Industry's leading project: the $30 million, second-phase expansion of Vale S.A.'s (NYSE:VALE) Long Harbour Commercial Nickel & Hydromet Process Plant in Long Harbour. The project involves adding capacity to bring the 12,000-ton-per-year nickel hydrometallurgical refinery up to 50,000 tons per year. Fluor Canada Limited (NYSE:FLR) (Saint John's) is performing design-engineering services.

The largest project set to kick off before the end of 2014 is AltaGas Income Trust's (Calgary) $70 million construction of natural gas storage caverns near Truro, Nova Scotia. The plans, which are part of the broader, $120 million Alton storage project, involve leaching four salt caverns and constructing natural gas-gathering and injection systems, for a total capacity of 150 million standard cubic feet per day. Matrix Solutions Incorporated (Calgary) is performing engineering services.

More than 75% of the region's TIV--a little more than $40 billion--is related to 76 projects that are in the planning stages, where plenty of factors could increase, decrease or eliminate the expected spending. The region also has 23 projects worth about $9.6 billion in the engineering stages, while 57 projects worth about $2.65 billion already have reached the construction stages.
