Researched by Industrial Information Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Lawrence Energy Center, which is located in Lawrence, Kansas, shut down its 448-megawatt (MW) Unit 5 on Wednesday after leaks were discovered in sections of the boiler. The facility is owned by Westar Energy Incorporated (NYSE:WR) (Topeka, Kansas).
Officials have pinpointed the leaks in the boiler's water wall area, the nose slope of the drum, and the superheat section. They said the superheat leak was the primary reason the unit was brought offline. Repairs will begin after the boiler has cooled enough to be entered.
Officials anticipate a brief outage. Unit 5 is scheduled to return to service on Friday, if there are no delays.
Lawrence Energy Center has three generating units, with a total capacity of 611 MW at full load. Units 3 and 4 will generate during repairs to Unit 5.
