The Lone Star State appears determined to become the life science industry's "third coast." Increasingly attractive to established and nascent companies, Texas offers sweet incentives, an almost unparalleled logistics platform and a vast, advanced institutional research infrastructure.

Every facet of the industry--including the burgeoning cellular and genetic therapeutics sector--is investing billions of dollars in manufacturing and research facilities across the state. Many public-private partnerships are evolving.

So much is going on in the greater Houston area alone, with the metro area slowly building on its commercial life-science potential. As home to the world's top medical center, the Houston area is a veritable brain trust. Following Lonza's $100 million-plus investment in an advanced cellular and genetic therapies plant in Pearland, just south of the Texas Medical Center (TMC), is the $1 billion-plus TMC3 project--with the "3" signifying the state as the industry's "third coast."

TMC3, which will feature more than 2 million square feet of laboratory space, is a collaborative effort from TMC, Baylor College of Medicine, Texas A&M University Health Science Center, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) and University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
