The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted approval to Rotasiil, the world's first heat-stable rotavirus vaccine. It was developed by Serum Institute of India, which produces and sells more doses globally than any other vaccine manufacturer, and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
SIIPL and NIAID collaborated through a 2005 license agreement to develop the vaccine, which has the ability to withstand temperatures up to 25 degrees Celsius. It does not require refrigeration and has a shelf life of up to 30 months.
