Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Engineering, design and consulting giant Stantec Incorporated (NYSE:STN) (Edmonton, Alberta) has had to make some workplace transitions in the COVID-19 environment, which has caused many states and provinces to issue stay-at-home orders and limit the number of people at work sites. However, as these orders are lifted, Stantec appears to be getting back to business, taking necessary precautions. Industrial Info is tracking $58.2 billion in active projects involving Stantec. The projects cover a range of sectors, including liquefied natural gas (LNG), Chemical Processing, Alternative Fuels and others.

One of the largest projects involving Stantec has seen a bit of slowdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. Royal Dutch Shell-led (NYSE:RDS.A) (The Hague, Netherlands) LNG Canada (Kitimat, British Columbia) thinned out its workforce at the site of the planned 14 million-ton-per-year LNG production and export facility in Kitimat in the midst of the pandemic. LNG Canada paused non-essential work such as worker accommodation construction, but kept up with some schedule-sensitive activities. Stantec is acting as a consultant on the project, which kicked off late last year and is expected to begin production in 2024. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
In Corunna, Ontario, near the Michigan border, Stantec is consulting on NOVA Chemicals Corporation's (Calgary, Alberta) polyethylene unit addition. The facility will produce an estimated 470,000 metric tons per year. The project kicked off in in mid-2018 and initially was planned to be completed by the end of 2021. However, Industrial Info researchers uncovered that due to COVID-19, NOVA Chemicals had reduced the construction workforce by about 90% at one point, pushing the completion date into 2022. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
In San Francisco, California, Stantec is at work on a biosolids digester facility and 5-megawatt (MW) combined heat and power plant for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. The facility is being constructed on a brownfield site, requiring the demolition of existing buildings, which began earlier this year. New buildings totaling 200,000 square feet and six 1.3 million-gallon digester tanks will be constructed. Upon completion, which is more than five years away, the facility will be able to process 280,000 pounds per day of biosolids to produce 2 million cubic feet per day of biogas and 5 MW of renewable energy. Heavy civil construction is expected to kick off later this year, followed by mechanical construction in 2021. The project has a total investment value of $939 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Stantec is performing engineering on Volkswagen's (Wolfsburg, Germany) body shop expansion in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which entails construction of a 770,000-square-foot building addition to support the production of the automaker's new electric crossover vehicle. The project kicked off late last year and is expected to be completed in 2022. For more information, see Industrial info's project report and June 17, 2020, article - Contractor Clayco at Work on More than $7.2 Billion of Projects.
In the life sciences sector, Stantec is performing architectural and engineering services for a cancer center research and development laboratory for Alberta Health Services in Calgary. The facility will be 13 stories, including five underground floors and 12 radiation vaults. Construction kicked off in late 2017 and is expected to be completed in mid-2022. For more information, see Industrial info's project report.
In Boston, Massachusetts, Stantec is performing design engineering on a genomic diagnostic testing facility for F. Hoffman-La Roche AG (Basel, Switzerland). The project, which kicked off late last year, entails the construction of a 16-story, 580,000-square-foot facility to consolidate the company's operations and expand its advanced genomic/biomarker testing for individual patients' cancers. It will also serve as the company's new North American headquarters. The project is expected to be completed in 2023. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
